Can Yoga Help to Weight Loss?

Can yoga help a certain person loses his or her weight? What is the meaning of yoga? Where does the word yoga come from? Why does it say that yoga can help a person to reduce his weight? What are the different types of yoga?

The History of Yoga

Researchers said that way back 5000 years ago, it was the time that yoga has developed. But other researchers believe that the yoga was not developed on 5,000 years ago, but rather it was developed way back 10000 years. The origin of yoga was really confusing. The writings about yoga were written in a breakable leaf that can be easily destroyed or tear.

Yoga came from different countries due to its transferring sacred teachings. Other researchers say that the history of yoga was divided for about four different periods-the pre-classical yoga, the classical yoga, the post-classical yoga and the modern period. What is the difference between this four main yoga periods?

The Pre-Classical Yoga

In Indus-Sarasvati that was located in Northern-India, yoga was developed for about 5000 years before. The Rig Veda which is the oldest sacred text where the term yoga was first mentioned. It was a compilation of sacred texts like songs and rituals that were being used by the Vedic priests or also known as Brahmans.

Brahmans and the Rishis was the one who developed the yoga by simply documenting their beliefs using a Upanishads. A Upanishads was a great work with 200 scriptures. The Upanishads internalized the idea of ritual sacrifice, teaching it through self-knowledge, action, and wisdom.

The Classical Yoga

For the first period of yoga which is the pre-classical yoga, beliefs and techniques were lead to confusion. The Patanjali’s Yoga-Sutras is the first presentation of yoga and modified the classical yoga. Patanjali teaches the presentation of yoga through his eight-limbed paths which are composed by the procedures to reach the enlightenment. He was also considered as the father of yoga, and his first presentation of yoga has been influenced the modern yoga.

The Post-Classical Yoga

After the time of Patanjali, the masters of yoga coined a yoga system that can give you long life and refresh your soul and body. They decline the lesson that the Vedas give unless they considered the activity of the body to reach the enlightenment in life. They make a Tantra Yoga that was designed to refresh your soul and body and decline the barriers between your physical body and spiritual body. This kind of connection led us to the Hatha Yoga- a yoga performed in western countries.

The Modern Period

From the year of the 1800s and 1900s, the masters of yoga start traveling in western countries to seek attention and to get followers. The kind of yoga-Hatha Yoga has been practiced by the Indian people with the help of yoga masters, Swamo Sivananda, and T. Krishnamacharya.

In the year of 1924, Krishnamacharya opened and school for those people who want to learn Hatha Yoga in Mysore. He also chose three students who will continue teaching hatha yoga in his school. These three students were named B.K.S Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, and T.K.V Desikachar. Sivananda was a writer who writes for about 200 books that are all about yoga and built yoga centers around the world. Hatha yoga nowadays has many different styles and emphasizing different benefits of yoga.

Different Types of Yoga

There are many different types of yoga with corresponding benefits that can be given to you, it can be; increase your body healthy, stress-free, alleviate the pain and also it can help you to reduce weight. The following types of yoga that this article will give to you will give you many benefits. It can be difficult for a beginner, but once you mastered this type of yoga, it will be easy for you to do it. The first type of yoga is;

  • Restorative yoga

This type of yoga is recommended for those who have stressful works. By practicing restorative yoga, this will help you to be stress-free. Restorative yoga is a type of yoga that is designed to make you be relaxed and refresh. This yoga has an impact on your parasympathetic nervous system that helps you to relax your body and rejuvenate your inner body. To practice restorative yoga, you need to have different yoga materials so that you can do different poses without struggling. The second type of yoga is;

 

  • Bikram yoga

This type of yoga was created by Bikram Choudhury. Bikram yoga needs different poses the must be done in a heated room. The heat of the room will help you to make sweat and helps you to get rid of your unwanted fats. This type of yoga gives you to make sweat, thus after practicing Bikram yoga, you need to take a lot of glass of water to avoid dehydration. The third type of yoga is;

This kind of yoga is more about physical activities. Practicing hatha yoga needs to hold a pose while breathing out and in. It also needs a lot of focus and meditation to make this hatha yoga practice. This hatha yoga will also teach you to learn some techniques that will make yourself relaxed. The fourth type of yoga is;

 

  • Iyengar yoga

This type of yoga was named after the founder B.K.S Iyengar. This type of yoga was recommended for those who suffer joint pain and in the process of healing from a certain injury. Iyengar yoga helps you to have correct postures and perfect alignment of your body. By doing the perfect pose of Iyengar yoga, you need to have some yoga materials like traps and blankets that will help you to do the pose perfectly without struggling body pain. This will help you to strengthens your body and muscles.

Practicing Yoga For Weight Loss

Practicing yoga may help you to burn your calories and excess fats. By doing yoga inside of a heated room, it can make you loss sweat and can get rid of your unwanted fats. This will also make you stronger and healthier in many aspects. It can relieve you from pain, and it is a good stress reliever. Some people say that yoga is just for spiritual aspects, but it wasn’t.
